It is during the school age when children tend to catch the most viruses and infections. These are usually spread from other children through hand contact, sneezing and sharing foods. If a child attends day care or preschool, chances are that they will begin to catch cold and germs even sooner.

While there is some good in catching cold and allowing the body to fight off infection, thus strengthening the immune system, there are some school age problems that you want to avoid. Colds are one thing, but other diseases and conditions that are rampant in elementary school as well as daycare. One way that you can avoid some of these common, but very troubling conditions, is to teach your children to practice good hygiene at school as well as home.

The daycare or learning center where you send your child should also be well versed when it comes to good hygiene for kids. Parents should be aware of the fact that no matter how hard the school tries to keep the preschool germ free, germs will appear. It is important that the child care center inform parents of any type of germ that is making the rounds.

Lice, impetigo and strep throat are all health conditions that run in schools and should be avoided. Lice is a common condition in schools where there are young children and parents should learn how to look for nits in the hair. Impetigo is a staph infection that usually is the result of a child that rubs his or her nose with the back of their hand and can be spread by hand to hand contact.

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and needs antibiotics to be cured. The fever that accompanies strep throat is called scarlet fever. The daycare or school will usually send out notices to parents if there are any cases of these conditions in the school.

Parents can make sure that their children practice good hygiene at home, wash their hands frequently – especially after using the bathroom or eating, and also avoid sharing foods with other children. Children should be taught not to sneeze or cough without covering their mouths. Children who are sick should be kept home from school.

Parents should work with the day care or preschool so that both can do their part when it comes to helping children practice good hygiene. When good hygiene for school age kids is practiced at an early age, it becomes a habit in adulthood that can also ward off other illnesses, such as influenza and other contagious illnesses.

If you have a child in school then you’ve probably discovered that there is some “black hole” there, where things just walk away and disappear. Your child has no idea where his coat went or when exactly it disappeared. If you’re lucky, the missing item(s) may turn up in the “lost and found” bin, but sometimes it simply can’t be recovered. Kids have so much going on while they’re at school that it can be hard for them to keep track of all their belongings.

Solution #1: Labeling

A way to circumvent these problems is to label your child’s items-coat, lunchbox, backpack, shoes, hats, school supplies, thermos, etc. You can buy pre-printed sticker or iron-on labels at a fraction of the cost that it would take to replace all the missing supplies. Iron-labels are especially nice because they do not come off, whereas sticker labels will eventually wear off. You can get the labels pre-printed with your child’s name or even add your telephone number for easy retrieval. This is especially handy when your teenager has to bring extra clothes and shoes for gym class. Losing an expensive pair of tennis shoes could be very costly to replace.

Solution #2: Color Coding

You can take your organization up a notch and try some color-coding of your labels. This is especially great for very young children who aren’t reading well yet. For example, try placing a colored label on a notebook and the same color on the corresponding textbook. Use a different color for each subject. Color code your child’s school supplies based on the subject. For instance, a compass, protractor, and ruler would fall under the math category, so all math supplies would be labeled in the same color. You can even have a separate file folder for each subject (in that subject’s color) where your child can keep his homework for that particular subject. One way to help homework keep from magically “disappearing” before it even reaches school is to have your child put the assignment in his backpack as soon as he finishes it. This way it will be ready to go the next morning.

Solution #3: Make Your Own Labels

If you’re going to be making a lot of labels (and if you have all the above to do, you will!), then you may find it cost effective to buy your own label maker. You would be surprised to learn that they are not very expensive. A very nice electronic model can be purchased for less than $30. Labels can be printed out in any of the following formats: paper, plastic, metallic, magnetic and iron-on. You’ll probably have so much fun that you’ll end up going crazy labeling around your home as well. And why shouldn’t you? This is a fantastic little organizational tool that might save you hours of time later looking for the proverbial “needle-in-a-haystack!”

Organizing with labels is all about saving time-time that would be spent searching endlessly for important tools for learning. In this busy day and age, who doesn’t want to save some time? The really great thing is that you can get started today! Reclaim some sanity for yourself and your child’s belongings and label, label, label!

One in three children is obese in the United States. The factors contributing to this epidemic vary, but poor nutrition and declining levels of physical activity are most often cited. Schools are slow to join the fight against childhood obesity, and the National School Lunch Program continues to serve the same unhealthy dishes from previous decades: full of calories and low on nutritional content.

Initiatives

Change has taken the form of initiatives with the goal of bringing more affordable and nutritious options to students across the country. The Re-authorization of the Child Nutrition Act passed in the Senate but has been delayed in the House of Representatives until a decision is made by December 3, 2010.

So while Congress takes its recess, kids across America are taking theirs as well. However when U.S. students take recess they are having to burn off the high-calorie junk food sold in vending machines and low-nutrition school lunches served in the cafeteria.

Another initiative underway to combat the epidemic of childhood obesity is Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.

Jamie Oliver, a renowned culinary expert from Essex, England became famous through several television series such as: The Naked Chef, Jamie’s Kitchen, Jamie’s School Dinners, Jamie’s Chef, Jamie at Home, and Jamie’s Ministry of Food.

His most recent show, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, focuses on educating families about food and nutrition in an effort to reverse the rate of childhood obesity. The series begins by focusing on Huntington, West Virginia, which has been referenced to as the Unhealthiest City in America, and educates 1st graders on basic nutrition. Throughout his three-month case study of the city, Jamie is met by the obstacles of naysayers and stubborn parents unwilling to make healthy decisions for their families. Jamie succeeds in making the public aware of the poor state of school lunches and nationwide eating habits in Food Revolution, but his mission has only begun.

Promote Good Eating Habits To Kids

National School Lunch Program

The National School Lunch Program has systems in place to assist over 101,000 schools with free or reduced price meals to lower-income students. Schools are required to match 30% of federal funds in the program, based on the funding they received in 1980. These matched funds have to be applied for through each state. Because of this, state contributions to the program are much smaller than the 30% requirement which leads to budget shortfalls and underfunded lunch programs.

Approximately 95% of schools participate in the program, and of the meals provided to students in 2009: 52% were free of charge & 10% were reduced. This still leaves 38% of lower-income students required to pay full price for school lunches and breakfasts.

The nutritional standards of the National School Lunch Program are only met by 30% of schools that participate.

The combination of state budget shortfalls and lack of nutritional oversight by schools has caused great concern, and is one of the items addressed in the un-passed Re-authorization of the Child Nutrition Act. Schools have trouble providing affordable lunch and breakfast to their students, as well as providing enough man-power to serve the students.

Make Healthy Food Choices

Private Sector Innovations

The private sector has begun to develop a number of products to address this problem that many schools face. Some companies have developed the solution of having “Automated Hot Food Machines”. These machines are vending machines customized to dispense hot food by using an internal microwave to heat up packaged refrigerated meals as they are purchased by each student. Students have the ability to vend meals with their student identification card on some models.

Some food service companies contracted to school districts are taking matters into their own hands by creatively making alternative dishes to popular unhealthy ones. For example, instead of the high-fat content fried tater tots, some food service companies are roasting potatoes in rosemary and garlic.

Affordable nutrition has yet to become a reality for U.S. schools.

Back to school party is like a New Year’s Party. It defines the event of going back to school and in some cases this time of the year calls for a celebration of some sorts. In order to start the new school year in style, the party could have a fun or educational theme. Some themes and activities for such a party are presented below.

A Trivia Game Party. Divide the party into two teams for a fun question-and-answer session for points. The team with the most points wins. Questions could be taken from a standard trivia board game or they could b derived from any period in history.

Jeopardy Party. For this game, contestants are also divided into two groups. However instead of each player stating the answer to a question, they can be given an answer and they have to state a question for that answer. It is like a reverse question-and-answer game. If you have watched Jeopardy, you will know how to play this game. If not, the rules are simple and can be easily obtained online.

Stickers Make Great Party Prizes

Simon Says. This game involves children listening carefully and follows whatever action the person in charge says. This person is ‘Simon’ and the rest must do what ‘Simon’ says. The person who stays on the longest without making a mistake or move that Simon did not order is the one who wins.

Duck-Duck-Goose. This is a game where all the participants sit in a circle. One person who is the ‘ducker’ walks around and taps the other children’s head while saying “duck…duck…duck…duck…’ and then suddenly the “ducker” will tap one kid on the head and yell “goose!” “Goose” will have to run after the “ducker” and tag him or her. If he is successful, then Goose becomes the “ducker” and he sits in the middle. If “Goose” fails, then the “ducker” sits in the middle. The last person who is not tagged wins.

Kids Trade and Collect Buttons

There are countless other games that children can play at back-to-school parties. For example, kids can play twister, relay games, dodge ball, kickball or charades (acting out a part without talking).

Kids at back-to-school parties can draw, play with modeling clay and make noodle necklaces or design paper airplanes. Activities such as crossword puzzles or word searches are also encouraged.

Items that they can use in school, such as a notebook, eraser, folder, pen or pencil are given as prizes at back-to-school parties. Sometimes novelty items such as a character folder or pencil box are given as prizes.

Sometimes themed party, such as summer or fall, is held as a children’s back-to-school party. The party location would then be decorated to represent that particular season and everyone coming to the party would dress accordingly.

Another appropriate themed back-to-school party would be a Labor Day themed party. This usually involves plenty of red, white and blue and fits well for this time of the year, since school is usually just before or after Labor Day.

Back-to-school parties can be just a party to get the kids to sing songs and dance together, or they can be talent time competition or an art and craft contest. After all the party is to help bring in the new school year and to promote school and learning so kids have a better attitude about receiving an education.

As frugal SAHM (stay at home moms), getting ready to send our kids back to school for another school year, there are a few tips that I recommend that can make the transition smoother, while saving money and even teaching your kids a thing or two about tightwad living.

1. Stock Up on Supplies

Late July and the month of August are the best times for a SAHM to get school supplies for literally pennies on the dollar. Most SAHMs get what is on their child’s supply list and are happy with their savings. But then, most moms also run out of sharp crayons, filler paper, notebooks and scissors (anyone here actually remember where their scissors are?) by mid-year. Be a frugal SAHM and spend a little extra money now to stock up on supplies to last you through the entire school year.

2. Color Coordinate

In our house, each child has his or her own color. It makes life so much easier! The red backpack, lunch box, pencil box, folders and notebooks belong to one child, while the blue belong to another. Now when someone leaves their notebook in the middle of the floor after school, I don’t have to dig around to try to figure out whose it is!

3. Butter Up the Teacher

Remember all those cheap school supplies you got? Well, with the economy as it currently is, more and more parents are not able to provide what their children need to be successful in school. Usually, it is the teachers that end up picking up the slack, at a great expense to their already tight funds. Consider donating extra supplies to your child’s teacher directly.

4. School Food

In our frugal SAHM house, we pack our lunches and snacks instead of purchasing them from school. Sunday is our preparedness day. We bake cookies and other treats to last the week (well, sometimes they get gobbled up early; we’ve learned to hide things from Daddy!) We also prewash, peel, and cut up veggies and put them into sandwich baggies for the week, such as carrots and celery. Juice boxes are stored in the freezer to keep lunch (and juice) cool until lunchtime everyday.

5. Money Management for Teens

The frugal SAHM tips above work great for elementary-aged kids, but what about teenagers? There is a whole different set of rules when it comes to teens! First, they should be given control over some of their own finances.

Offer to give your teen the same amount of money you would pay each month for school lunches. Your teen has the option of buying school lunch or using the cash to buy food at the grocery store to take a sack lunch, and pocket the difference. The rule here is that lunch must be eaten. Your teen will surprise you!
